There are some huge misconceptions about marketing that are floating around the entrepreneur world. Today I want to discuss them and break down what you should be focusing on.
Selling should not be draining. It should not feel that way for you or the person on the receiving end of your pitch. Selling gets to be easy and fun if you decide it should be. The choice is all yours. Before you decide to start selling, there are a few things that you need to be very clear on.
Every Monday morning, the algorithms change and every social media platform you are on is sending you an update. Okay, not every morning, but often enough that things change in the blink of an eye and you can see your page reviews disappear and the things you took for granted are no longer easily accessible. The fact is that your social media engagement affects your business growth.
Let me share a story of why having your Facebook ads not suck is important.
There once were two friends who wanted to get into separate businesses, Smarty and Silly. Smarty wanted to sell Pies and Silly wanted to sell Loaves of Bread.
People want to buy from people they trust and they like to look for the experts when they are ready to spend their money. Unfortunately, there are many people calling themselves experts who have no proof of their expertise. These people still get people to buy from them but their jig is short lived.
You are not trying to sell to everybody. I know you have this being said before because it so true. Many entrepreneurs are of the misguided belief that they need to cast as wide a net as possible to get more the most clients.
There is a huge misconception that once you are starting a business and to maintain a business you need to burn the candle at both ends. Don’t worry, I was also of that belief until I decided I did not want to be stuck in front my laptop for 10 hours every day Sunday to Sunday.
We have been in this business of helping other businesses exceed, grow and breakthrough new markets for quite a number of years and there are a few key things that we have learnt along the way. Some of them include:
1. Always keep learning
Reading and educating yourself is key to your success. You never know too much. There is always a new way, a better way, a more unconventional way. How can you help your clients if you yourself are not educated about the products and services that are available on the market.
So many of us hide behind our computers under the pretense that if we post often on social media and engage in enough discussions with people in groups on Facebook, LinkedIn or Google + then our businesses will grow and we will dominate the market.
Most of my clients usually ask me how I am able to show up consistently on social media, handle all my daily client calls and do the marketing and public relations that I do for my bigger clients. The truth is I learned via trial and error. By making huge mistakes. By wasting a ton of time. By bawling my eyes out and finally by taking the time to figure out what works and does not work for me.
