Common Misconceptions About Marketing

Common Misconceptions about Marketing

There are some huge misconceptions about marketing that are floating around the entrepreneur world. Today I want to discuss them and break down what you should be focusing on.

When most people think about marketing or they go to seek help for their marketing, their focus tends to be on the front end. The front end is a pretty part of marketing. The images for your IG feed, the well-choreographed videos, the countless pictures of yourself, and the popular reels. But what many fail to tell or teach is that the back end of your marketing effort is just as important.

An email list or a blog will yield no marketing results if it is not set up properly. If time is not taken to ensure that your email list is segmented or that your blog is properly optimised for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Also, if your social media pages are not optimised and no attention is paid to analytics and insights. All of these things affect your marketing effort.

WHAT MARKETING IS NOT!

Marketing is NOT starting a social media page and posting every day with the hopes of people seeing you and buying from you. Marketing is the combination of activities that you do that work together to move you from where you are to where you want to be.

It is NOT pretty pictures and filters and having the best-looking tiled images on IG. You can put out a ton of effort doing this and still get no results because who you have hired has not explained to you the fundamentals of the back end of your marketing engine.

It is also NOT about showing up everywhere and being everything to everybody. Your marketing is a synchronized journey that gives your audience the opportunity to build know, like and trust.

Many entrepreneurs confuse marketing and sales and do not understand the separation yet the marriage of the two forces.

What marketing should be

WHAT MARKETING SHOULD BE

What you should be focused on is integrating your platforms in such a way that you increase your visibility and brand awareness. It is understanding how your blog can be linked to your podcast, how your podcast can be linked to your YouTube channel and how your webinars are turned into digital products etc. This also means understanding how to repurpose content and gives your content a longer shelf life to increase your SEO.

Your marketing is how you build a relationship with your audience both in front and behind the scenes of your business. And because this is seldom taught or explained to many entrepreneurs, they find themselves endlessly posting on social media, creating videos, doing reels, and still getting no sales.

It is about understanding your target audience and providing a solution to their challenges in a way that makes it easy for them to follow and buy from you daily. It should not be complicated or verbose. There is simplicity in marketing and building a raving fan base of clients…if done correctly.

It is not talking to your audience but talking for your audience. And building a connection through your stories and lessons shared.

MARKETING FEEDS YOUR SALES

Your marketing and your sales work in tandem. Your marketing feeds your sales funnel. Through your opt-in which you would have created using a landing page from your email provider. You feed your audience information that will drive them into your funnel.

Throughout your sales funnel, you continue to provide marketing support with valuable information. And you also collect information and continue segmenting your audience for emails or ads. There is a whole strategy to building the back end of your business so you can better attract your ideal clients.

I am not saying all of this to scare you from starting a business. But to encourage you to look beyond the surface of what you see and understand that as you build your business, that the same focus needs to be placed in setting up the back end of your business so you can get the results you truly desire.
